I like Rab a lot as a jockey, but I wish Frankie had been on Sweet William! Heigh ho! No complaints on the day, with Kinross going in as well as the Newmarket pick I mentioned, Ebn Shaddad. Frankie's ride on Absurde was insanely good. The first two jockeys home had a combined age of 101! You really do wonder whether Frankie can stick to the retirement plan when he is riding like he has done this week. His fitness is unbelievable for a man of his age. I can't say I've made fortunes this week, but I sure have enjoyed the meeting. Best flat course in the country, for my money - and the best-run course too. Doncaster St Leger Meeting next up, with a new Thursday to Sunday schedule. Bring it on!

I don't fancy his chances of getting bets on there again!

Indeed I do, x11! I've followed racing for many decades. Throughout life's trials and tribulations I believe it's what has kept me sane - although some would doubt that! As a matter of fact, I've just checked the time I posted my thoughts on each day of the York Meeting:

    Weds 5.48am
    Thurs 6.02am
    Fri 6.42am (late!)
    Sat 6.21am

Bonkers, eh? I'd never claim my selections make fellow BBS'ers any money, but I like to share my thoughts, especially if it sparks debate on the day's races and the merits of the participants. Racing has been called "the great triviality"; but it can also be a lot of fun!

    Good man.
I was at Southport last week and came across this painted gable end near the centre.

On a separate issue Mr Kaht, and seeing as you are frequently studying form, why not post a 'tip of the day' if you spot anything worth a mention during the week rather than waiting for big meetings? Would give people chance to contribute.

It's an interesting thought, Mr KCP but I think there are certain practicalities. I do tend to post if I think I've turned up something special on an 'ordinary' day's racing. But I think to do it too often might give some folk the wrong expectations. I'm very happy if 33% of my selections win*, as I try and achieve better than an average 2/1 in terms of the price of my winners. That way lies profit. But it must follow that 67% of my selections may lose - then people think I'm crap! (Or they bet too much on my poor thoughts)

Another problem is this. Today at Newbury I'm following Star Music in the 2.00 (best price now is 4/1) and Mediaeval Gold and Sailing On in the 4.15 (best prices now 11/2 and 4/1 respectively). But when I backed them yesterday, all three were longer prices. So it's difficult for me to recommend them as 'value' bets when I know I'm on at longer. This is especially so where I am backing more than one horse in a race. (Bear in mind that all three selections may be part of the 67%, not part of the 33%!) Most days you need to pounce on the price at final declarations stage, which is 48 hours before the race.

*Since the start of 2013, my overall win strike rate has been 31.3%. Happily, the average price of my winners has equaled 30.5%. So while my strike rate suggests I should have got an average price for my winners of 3.19/1, I actually achieved 3.27/1. Not a huge difference, you might think. But across thousands of bets over an 11-year period, it makes a crucial difference! I don't know that people seeing me put up a tip of the day would appreciate those nuances! But aside from the maths is the fascinating (to me) study of form lines, breeding, different course configurations and trainer/jockey form, etc, etc. All very nice to muse over when you don't have work to bother about!

I see what you're saying about peoples' expectations. People do assume a decent tipster will constantly give them winning tips when logically it's impossible to do so. Even worse when there's a losing run as happens to us all. perhaps you're right not to post overall
