Absolutely...and mostly centering around London and the big cities. York, Lincoln, Bristol, Newcastle.

THIS IS THE THREAD OF THE SEASON!!!!

well done all. As my dad is from Barnsley (but I'm not so lucky) I know his accent has always given him celebrity status in a small corner of County Durham. And I love the Barnsley accent - whilst different from anywhere else in Yorkshire, I really do think it's the stereotypical Yorkshire accent that southern and media types hark on about (even if they are "tekkin t'piss"). Mind, I reckon I was that one person who was disappointed when the match prog stopped doing "Tommy Tyke sez"!

Also, in terms of migration to Barnsley, I know my dad's dad was from Gateshead...showing evidence of said migartion from other areas (esp coalmining ones)... I guess his son made a reverse migration. I think said grandad worked in the mines, but he died when I was 2. I know I've grown up with silly amounts of old miners' (Davy) lamps around the house anyway!

cheers all, always good to read a bit of history on here. From my north east upbringing, and the amount of ginger in my family, I think I can safely assume my other half comes from solid Viking stock!

    I live in Bow...

as in Cockneys are "born within the sound of Bow Bells" and can confirm nobody talks in comical cockernee anymore - unless you include modern "rhyming slang" like "it's all gone a bit Pete Tong"...which is everywhere anyway.

Mind, there's not many Cockneys living here. It's all economic refugees from the north and/or Bangladesh, etc.

I'd like the summer of '69

Then Brian Adams may finally shut the f*ck up about it.

    I considered it...

but being -4 years of age, I figured I'd not get much of that "love" anyway.

Bryan Adams. God I used to hate that other tune of his. I think he's now a celebrity photographer. He need never have been a "singer" at all...

RE: Yorkshire accent - & passing it on

R kid was born in Trinidad, now lives in Wales, but started school in Scotland.

He has a right strong Yorkshire accent from me. and he has never even lived in England let alone Tarn!!

It meks me laugh when I teach students techical words, when I hear them use them, they all talk with my accent. Gradley.

The name Barnsley originates from the Anglo-Saxon description 'Beorn's lay' (where a 'lay' is a clearing). The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1089.

    Not Berneslai then?

    RE: Not Berneslai then?

It's entered in the Doomsday Book as Berneslai......but this is merely a variation on the Anglo Saxon name of a Woodland clearing (Leah, lay, lea, lee etc) of a man called Beorn......hence like the guy said Beorn's leah (ley).

The Saxon people around Barnsley, by all accounts, were one of the vicious sets and they were very protective over their land....outsiders were not welcome at all. This could be why Barnsley pretty much remained an automonous race.
