On this basis, and with a bit of lateral thinking, I'm re-uniting Darren Sheridan with Jovo in my midfield. I can't see how Stumpy wouldn't qualify on the same basis as their John.
I'm not sure how it affects FIFA eligibility rules, but Irish citizenship can be inherited from generation to generation ad infinitum, providing the parent has claimed their citizenship before the child is born, even if nobody has ever set foot in the country. We found all of this out when looking at possible post-Brexit scenarios. My great-grandad was Irish, meaning that my mum can still at any time claim Irish citizenship, despite the fact that her mother never had an Irish passport, and that my mum had never visited Ireland until last year. Under FIFA rules, my mum could theoretically have represented Ireland. I am not entitled to an Irish passport, but had my mum claimed her Irish citizenship before I was born, then I would be entitled to one. I genuinely wonder if my mum had an Irish passport by descent, whether then I in turn would qualify to play for Ireland, despite having been there once for three days, and already being of the 4th generation. I'm pretty sure I also qualify to play for Russia through length of time spent in the country, but I am as Russian as I am Chinese, and I don't remotely feel any connection with Ireland, despite to roots.
