Re: Yep! Beating Man U in the Cup (Scott Jones, of course) was tremendous for me - if only because I legged it back to my local in Salford and got there just before last orders at 11pm. The place was still full of sulking ManU fans - and here am I walking in, beaming, wearing my Barnsley shirt. Oh how I loved that moment.
Just read your post fully My earliest memory of actually watching Barnsley was in the FA cup vs Aston Villa in 1995 (However i'd been going to games earlier than that), which we lost 2-0. My first experience of an FA cup away day, was at Old Trafford in 1998, and all I remember is everyone standing up in front of me when Schmeichel sliced the back pass. My best memory of the FA cup has got to be at Anfield, I remember standing in the ground before the game hoping that we didn't get embarrased, because at the time Liverpool were challenging for the title. After Kuyt scored, I didn't think it would be our day. But with the saves Steele pulled off that day, I knew one goal could force a replay, and for us to get 2. When Howard smashed home the winner, I went numb, so much so that I elbowed r lass in the head and didn't even realise. That was an awesome day out.
Re: Just read your post fully Liverpool was just amazing as we should have been beat about 5v1....BUT we deserved to beat Chelsea and I loved every minute of the game and I remember just looking around the night sky and into the east stand from the ponty when Oddjob scored thinking '****ing hell'
That Feeling you Describe.... That's the true football fan feeling. You have to support a club some way down the ladder to feel that. You can't feel like that if you support a club that wins all the time. Just a thought.
Chuffin Rhyl - went to all 3 games. It doesn't get much lower than that. Also the first ever Barnsley game I can remember attending - 18.2.61 Barnsley 1 Luton 0, little Jackie Lunn cutting in from the right wing to smash a shot into the Kop end goal.
Re: Just read your post fully I remember that game Villa had signed Tommy Johnson & Gary Charles the day before and they paraded them in front of the the tempory kop before kick off. Andy Townsend hit the bar from about 40 yard and I'm sure it's still shaking to this day.
Waking up on a Saturday morning going Liverpool. Cheap ale. Getting tickets off a tout. Celebrating the winner like a loon at the back of the home end. Back into Liverpool. Worlds smallest pub. Smile a yard wide. ****ing off some fifty year old scouse skinheads in their lacoste. Laughing and singing all the way back to sheff. Getting the Chelsea tickets. Getting a raffle ticket having a few beers and stopping up listening to drum and bars while the worlds tallest person gets out of a smart car. The crack at dawn with people singing reds songs the party atmosphere followed by the Saturday out watching pompey beat united then beating Chelsea falling out of the ale house at one blowing fifty on a taxi telling the driver your going Wembley. Texting Gordon while he was on talk sport telling him we were queuing for tickets. All good fun.
The Cup run in '80 always stands out for me, Enfield etc and Boro away. No team took more fans to Boro than us either before or after. Thinking about that day it saddens me to think footie will never be like that again.
