I go for football and to explore new places/cultures. Usually go for 2 or 3 days, so I have plenty of time to see more than a football stadium.
Cambridge, worked there for 4 years, late 70s/early 80s, always loads to do and town folk were great once they knew you weren't a student.... Don't know what it's like now though.
My missus' s Grandad used to talk about Wath and its famous " Culdits" whatever they were.! Said they should have been one of the seven wonders of the World.!
If we're talking party, in the UK, Glasgow. In Europe, Amsterdam. In the World, and in a completely different league, Las Vegas.
I think Rome is possibly my favourite city. I'm a massive history fan and the first time I saw the view across the forum brought tears to my eyes
UK - Edinburgh or Bristol World - visited some amazing places, but Sydney is as chilled out as Sheffield or Manchester but with as much going on as London, and Lisbon is beautiful, stylish and very reasonably priced. Love the big Asian cities - Shanghai and Bangkok in particular are a full on all out attack on your senses. Relentless. New York - well I was take it or leave it with Manhattan, but Brooklyn and in particular Williamsburg is insanely cool and unique. Off to New Orleans next year, which I reckon will be up there. Hopefully it won't be as bank-breaking as NY either!
Crikey... that's a question. I'll stick with UK, Europe and Worldwide. My favourite place in the UK is Bristol. Chilled, fantastic sights, green spaces, good food and drink. Go every year and can't see that changing unless I end up living there which may happen one day if I ever tire of London. Europe... two places, one city, one place. One is Rome. I love Italy and visited around a dozen places there now, but Rome is something else (going back in March next year). It's like a giant archaeological site and just history and heritage on every corner. Throw in incredible food and it stands head and shoulders above its next peer for me. Second place in Europe is Alta in the Arctic Circle. Alta as a town is pretty non descript, though it wraps round a huge fjord which partly freezes in high winter. But a few miles away you're in the heart of two valleys, forests and sweeping mountains. In winter the sun doesn't rise for long periods, in summer, the sun doesn't set. Northern lights, Elk and reindeer meat, waist deep snow, Lynx and Bears. Snowmobiles and walks in the wilderness and a little wooden cabin. For me its a perfect reminder of how incredible this planet can be, and how you can find peace by being away from hustle and bustle and things we've made to be important in modern society. Worldwide... that's very tricky. Place, for similar reasons as above, I'm going to say Halong Bay in Vietnam. Despite much increased tourism and sadly more boats than their should be, the place is magical. Thousands of limestone karsts jutting from the sea, the sea as flat as can be, sea eagles circling overhead and pure serenity as the boat chugs along through the rocks. City... I think I'd have to say Bangkok so far. Thriving, bustling and a bit crazy (though nothing as crazy as Hanoi), amazing streetfood and such diversity from wealthy traipsing through luxury shopping malls and then in another part of town, seeing shanty areas of wooden frames with torn material acting as a roof. Culture, religion, history. Not a beautiful city, but enriching if you let it be.
I've really enjoyed this thread. A great variety of favourite locations, all for different and fascinating reasons & tastes.
And nobody has said Barnsley yet... I love travelling to new places, but I get jealous when I see others haev been somewhere I haven't, which is quite often! When Whitey mentioned florence I thought to myself, "I can't wait for Serie A fixtures to come out so I can go and watch Fiorentina"
You opened the thread with the word city, which Barnsley isn't. Personally, I'm proud to come from Barnsley and love the place.
