    Its strange how things start

I'd been to Leeds a couple of times before but never really felt like I was at home there.

The my Dad came home from work on the night of the game, and totally out of the blue asked if I wanted to go to watch Barnsley and see if they can get promoted.

First ever night game - hanging on to the railing separating the paddock (now west lower) from the ponty end - and absolutely loved it - was hooked straight away.

Went to about 10 games the following season then had a season ticket for the first time in 80/81 when we were promoted. Never looked back from that.

It helped to suck me in and grab me hook line and sinker that I started watching, as an impressionable 10-11 year old around the time that we were building what I still consider to be the one of the best sides we have ever had. The 81/82 side was just awesome. Glavin a big favourite, but loved Stuart Barraclough as well.

    Home v Aston Villa 1970

Bruce Rioch and a bald headed guy called Andy Lochhead played. I even remember a couple of chants from the Ponty namely "Birmingham, Birmingham Gypos" and in support of the Reds forward "E for B and Leslie Lea"

Lost 2-0 - not many there but got me used to the disappointment early in life!

    Not only am I confident

I'd bet Laura's life on it. Ron Wigg scored the goal in the first half at the Spion Kop end. We drew 0-0 in the return fixture (Peter Fox made his only 1st team appearance for us on loan from Wednesday).
I'll give £20 to a charity of your choice if I'm proved wrong.

RE: Home v Aston Villa 1970

I remember that match, Chico Hamilton played for them as well.
Someone nearly killed me that night, Barnsly had a shot, went wide and hit me smack on the head, flew back up about 5 steps in Ponty.
Andy Lockhead was fantastic in the air that night.won every ball in the box.

    That was 1981, not 1980, i remamber

the touchlines being 5 deep with fans for the last few minuites, the ball couldnt have gone out of play lol, think the crowd were on the pitch before the final whistle, then we heard the Roverum result had gone against us, still, we had had the undoubted joy of beating them on the tues night to secure promotion, one of my top 3 games at oakwell, along with grimsby in 79 and bradford in, whenever lol

Scorer was Gary Liddell .. Andys dad

Ron Wigg scored in a Friday night match circa 1977. Grimsby won 2-1 and there was lots of crowd trouble, luckly me and my West Melton mates went in the West Stand for some reason.

Peter Fox played one game in a 0-0 draw away at Watford in 78

and I was at all three games
